Animoca Brands Launches DAO to Develop Metaverse Standards: Here’s How Its Different From MSF

Hong Kong’s Animoca Brands, a prominent player in the Web 3 space, has introduced a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) named the Open Metaverse Alliance for Web 3 (OMA3). This initiative aims to promote high levels of interoperability and transparency across virtual land, digital assets, ideas, and services, ensuring accessibility to all communities. OMA3 functions as a consortium and has already attracted several members, including Animoca’s subsidiary, The Sandbox, along with renowned metaverse gaming platforms like Decantraland, Splinterlands, Cryptovoxels, Dapper Labs, and Alien Worlds.

Beyond Web 3 projects linked to Animoca Brands, the alliance also incorporates DAO framework specialist Wivity, virtual reality and game developer Space, and blockchain gaming company Upland.

“We envision a metaverse free from confining barriers, where individual platforms seamlessly connect and interact,” proclaims the group. “Our standards are founded on the principles of genuine ownership and real-time interoperability.”

OMA3’s mission is to construct an infrastructure that ensures the metaverse functions as a unified system where digital assets, identities, and data are open to all and controlled by users, not centralized platforms. The alliance emphasizes that users will have ownership of their assets and the freedom to transfer them to any OMA3 world without requiring approval from individual platforms.

OMA3, as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), will function as a consortium, guided by principles of inclusivity, transparency, and Web 3 values.

This announcement follows the recent unveiling of another metaverse alliance called the Metaverse Standards Forum (MSF), founded by tech giants Microsoft, Meta (formerly Facebook), Alibaba, and Sony. The MSF, which has already amassed around 650 members, aims to harness the full potential of the metaverse by establishing a foundation of open standards. It serves as a platform for collaboration between standard organizations and companies to foster the development of interoperability standards for an open and inclusive metaverse.
